For the rest of us such decisions are quite complex, for instance we need to consider the other people we might be travelling with, how much we may need to carry, the weather etc.

What Mobikes do is give an extra option and compliment other modes of transport. For instance, they allow a lot of people to combine tube travel with cycling as evidenced by the large number of bikes outside tube stations. Also if you have to get somewhere locally quickly they are often better than using the car.

They probably won't achieve that much for the environment as resulting modal shift from cars is likely to be minimal but the potential benefits in terms of health and convenience are significant. We should regard the current issues as teething problems with a system which hopefully will be with us for a long time.
