| There is also the issue of wheelies being so heavily contaminated that the contents aren’t recyclable at all. A recent investigation on recycling in West London showed that several boroughs were sending their mixed recycling overseas and claiming that it had been recycled. In fact it wasn’t. It was sitting on vast landfill sites and leaking into the rivers and oceans. Ealing was one of the boroughs. We fought long and hard against wheelies in Chiswick and with Hounslow we won. The recycling rate for Hounslow is very poor but it isn’t because of using boxes for kerbside sorting. It’s lack of co-operation from residents, particularly in blocks of flats where boxes aren’t used and the fact that mixed recycling is no longer being collected from flats over shops. However it is hoped that it will be eventually when the WLWA have finished building a “dirty” MRF for separating clean goods. |
