I am sure that no Government has come to office with the intention of reorganising the NHS from top to bottom, least of all a Coalition Government composed of moderate, slightly right of centre Conservatives and radical, left of centre Liberal Democrats. However it has become apparent since 2010 that the previous Blair-Brown Labour Government lavished and in many cases wasted huge amounts of taxpayers' money on the NHS without obtaining anything like a proportionate improvement in clinical and medical outcomes. The Francis Report on the scandalous performance of the Mid-Staffs NHS Trust where 1,200 people died prematurely between 2005 and 2009 under a Labour Government, is, I am sorry to say, the tip of a tragic iceberg. At least 14 other trusts are being investigated at the moment and many trusts are facing financial bankruptcy thanks to the high costs of the PFI schemes forced on them by Gordon Brown. The British NHS is no longer the best state health service in Europe. Consequently. the present Government has no alternative but to reorganise and reform the NHS yet again and reverse the failures of the Labour years. If that means that private sector expertise and disciplines need to be introduced where former Communists like David Nicholson have failed, then so be it. But most importantly decision making in the NHS must be taken away from accountants, bueaucrats and so called executives and handed back to trained medical professionals such as doctors and nurses. I won't be signing this silly and poorly thought out petition. |
