| More people murder other people than foxes ever do. Just about every day there is a report of at least one murder. There were 670 murders in England and Wales in 2008/9. There were several cases of dogs killing children - far more cases than have been reported than of foxes attacking let alone killing people. But we don't go round saying all dogs should be shot or all men of a certain age (and murders are usually committed by men) should be shot. Let's get the danger from foxes into perspective. I wouldn't leave my window open at night not because I am afraid of foxes but because I am afraid of potential murderers. Comparisons are important because we are losing our sense of perspective in singling out foxes as committers of crimes and for punishments that we don't mete out to other creatures who transgress. It is up to us to take precautions to ensure we are not in danger but it doesn't automatically mean getting the shotgun out. |
