"Is the area unsightly, unsafe, boring, unappreciated, not reaching its potential?" The only bits I can suggest here are along the major roads, which does tend to look seedier and less loved than most of the area, for fairly obvious reasons (pollution, noise, transient populations). Indeed, a study that goes back a bit and examines the history of road schemes and their impact on Chiswick might well be interesting, not least because the anti-roads movement in London sprang in large part from local community groups in the area. On the whole, though, I'd suggest Brentford as an better example, since it's got nearly everything you'd want, the urban regeneration there having stalled for years leaving a good deal of unsightly/decrepit buildings on the south side of the main road, while other areas (e.g. the Gasworks and former water treatment works, the former Wallis House, Great West Road) have been more-or-less regenerated at various times, offering an interesting contrast in styles and fashions in architecture and planning. |
