Vanessa, it's actually not true to say that in WW2 "without us the world would be in a bloody awful state" and that "we were on our own with sod all". It is absolutely true that our fighter pilots did a sterling job in the Battle of Britain, but we also had what is now the Commonwealth on our side. For example, 2.5m Indians fought for us, of whom 36,000 were killed. The Indian Treasury donated £1bn to Britain’s war effort (this despite widespread famine in the sub-continent). Indian soldiers received 4,000 awards for gallantry and 31 Victoria Crosses. These things have been air-brushed out of the history books. I was certainly told nothing about them when I was at school and you'll be very hard-pressed to find any reference to them in any of the scummy, anti-immigrant right wing tabloids that most people read.
