I hate to disagree with your grandmother but the eyes are very easy to trick. If the eyes beat the 'ears' (meaning learnt knowledge) then scientists would rely upon anecdotal evidence, eye witness reports rather than objective means. I agree it's best to question. I think learning how to work out what is likely to be true and what is baloney is a great life skill. A great book on this is Carl Sagan's 'a demon haunted world' which is a great read for any skeptic (those who like to question things, also known as free thinkers). The best part is his 'baloney detection kit' as it pull out many logical fallacies that people use that show they may not be telling the truth, much like 'non verbal leakage' is useful to tell if someone is lying when talking (for example touching the nose or lips whilst talking or the direction they look when you ask them a question). |
