The gig economy is NOT a good deal for most of the people who are employed in that way. We should ALL be thinking about the world as a whole and not just about what we want and whether we want something just because it is cheap. There is a saying "Buy cheap Buy twice" and that is because cheap often means that the quality is poor or it could also mean that the working conditions for the people who make whatever you are buying are poor and illegal and they are being exploited. Some people may laugh at and disregard Health & Safety and Building Regulations etc but they are there for the wellbeing and safety of workers. Of course if you are working illegally then you are disadvantaged even more because you may not know, may not be paid correctly or at all and may not be working in a safe environment - let alone be paying NI or tax - and neither might your employer. |
