You can also burn your garden waste and rake the ashes into the soil, although if you have Philippa as a neighbour you might get into trouble.

While composting is to be encouraged it has to be done properly to produce useable stuff. Too much green will not break down well, and big piles of grass cuttings tend to go slimy. A good mix of green and brown material, with peelings and other non-meat or cooked kitchen waste is best. Perennial weeds with tap roots and seeds shouldn’t go in, along with anything diseased.

Ideally you would have three heaps or bins. One in current use, one with material breaking down and one with useable compost. Don’t forget they need to be on soil for the brandling worms to get in there, and you should turn the material regularly.

Alternatively you could get a hot bin composter, although if you have a lot of cut material it may not all fit in.
