It certainly does tend to strengthen the possibility of M&S expanding into this unit but the looming closure of Poundland may not necessarily be related. I had always assumed that Poundland was a relative retail success but its parent company, Polish owned PepCo has had to make big write offs and was already in the process of shutting stores across the country. It had the huge disadvantage of being branded in a way that made it impossible to inflation-proof. Maybe it will return as TwoPoundland? If M&S was actually to expand on both sides it would be a very big unit but they have already made it clear that Chiswick will remain a FoodHall rather than a full line store. My guess would be that, if they do actually control the leases for Mint Velvet and the former running shop, they will let them go if they take on the Poundland lease because that address gives a much bigger boost to floor space. |
