Steve's got it the wrong way round. Increasing the number of pedestrians via car free areas reduces crime. LTNs also reduce street crime - although bicycle thefts went up in Waltham! https://findingspress.org/article/19414-the-impact-of-introducing-a-low-traffic-neighbourhood-on-street-crime-in-waltham-forest-london There is some sort of faith tenet that having more cars driving down a road makes people safer. As anyone who has driven, cycled and walked knows, you're much less aware of what's happening on the street when you're in the car, than if you're cycling and walking and you have more opportunity to witness and intervene - even if just passively. Streets become oppressive and feel dangerous when they are empty of people. |
