I doubt whether the Beeching cuts which destroyed so much of the railway network would have taken place on the scale they did if the Big Four companies had still been independent operations. They tried to promote rail travel, keep freight on the rails, innovate with links to other forms of transport, and had kept things moving during WW2 in very difficult circumstances. Instead of being given support and help to recover after the war, they were handed over to the BTC and things went downhill from then on. |
