I am really upset that there are no staff on hand to ensure that the park is safe for me to use when I go for a run in it and I am quite sure that other park-users feel the same. I don't think anyone should be allowed in the park unless there are staff on hand to ensure safety. It's an utterly ridiculous argument and it's obviously being trotted out as a feeble excuse because there's something else going on. My Dad took up bowls when he was in his seventies and his dodgy knees and ticker made it difficult for him to do anything very energetic. It got him out in the fresh air, doing gentle competitive exercise, maintaining hand/eye co-ordination and meeting new people. In the club he joined (not in London) there were lots of younger people too. There would be nothing to stop anyone taking a set of bowls to Gunnersbury Park and playing on any suitable bit of grass, in the same way that people play scratch games of cricket and football so unless they've erected barriers which you'd have to damage to gain access I would just go and use the bowling green whenever you want to. It seems a massive shame and grossly unfair that this local amenity is being lost. Could somebody not broker a reprieve whereby the club is permitted to continue for, say, another year but in that time must boost its membership and show that there's a significant demand for the facility? Just trying to think of some sort of compromise which might buy time to improve the position. |
