"Anyway won't 20% of the 50% be for VAT effectively so the scheme is really 30%  for the taxpayer??" Not sure what you're trying to say.  VAT applies as a percentage of the price charged, so the amount of VAT is halved if the price is reduced by 50%. But anyway, VAT for the hospitality industry, including restaurants, cafés and pubs, has been reduced from 20% to 5% from 15 July.
