The scheme has helped increased footfall but from an already dreadful starting point. A 10% uptick from a 90% drop is not going to make ends meet. That isn't limited to hospitality. It's a finger in the dyke solution. What will help is getting back to where things were. That is the basis for all equations for turn-over, pricing, staffing, rent, etc. All businesses are based on volume of something be it goods or services. Volume for hospitality no longer exists. Another example: holiday bookings. At this point in the year we would be taking bookings for Thanksgiving. Pubs would start promoting Christmas lunches. At present we have no clue if that is even possible and if it will be, we know we won't be able to book the usual number of covers. Obviously that will not happen. What then? What next? No one knows. Part of my point is not to look at this initiative as the fix. |
