"the failures of Network Rail, which was nationalised by the Blair-led Labour government. " Wasn't this, in effect, "the failure of capitalism" for the privatisation of rail infrastructure? In other words, running rail infrastructure doesn't generate sufficient return for private companies. It requires large capital investment and planning decades in advance and this simply doesn't fit what shareholders are looking for in terms of return on investment. The original London underground lines were built by private companies, they couldn't make money so they were taken into state ownership. Is there an example of successful privatised rail infrastructure anywhere in the world? |
