| Absolutely right. C&A, which is still massive on the continent, turning over €7billion annually, used to draw people to the 'wrong' end of Hounslow High Street which became a ghost town when they withdrew. The retail model has changed beyond all recognition. An example: I needed an adaptor for a flash gun for a new camera. In the past I would have gone to any one of a number of High Street photographic shops to try and get one (Chiswick Cameras don't stock the brand I need). They have virtually all gone. Less than a minute on the laptop and I found one at an independent camera shop in Sheffield***. I ordered it at 16:00 yesterday, it was delivered just after 09:00 this morning. No need to go to the High Street. In Holland, when retail units become void the conversion to residential is almost instant. Nothing unusual about walking down the High Street past a shop then an entrance to an apartment block, then a shop and so on. Perhaps we should consider the same, not a multi-story monstrosity but conversion of the existing building stock. ***They still have two retail shops but have changed their model to 'clicks and mortar'. |
