It goes without saying that when you hire a car you should check it over for any existing damage.  In my experience, it's surprising how often you find minor dents and scrapes that aren't documented, in which case I always insist that details are recorded on the hire document and countersigned by the hire company.

As well as protecting you against being held responsible for anything you find, it also puts you in a much stronger position if the hire company claim to have found other new damage when you return the car, since you can successfully argue that their pre-hire inspection was inadequate.
