Andrew - yes, I don't disagree with many of the points you raise and I certainly don't think that air quality/pollution should be dismissed out of hand, but I do think there is far more to that issue than the impact of new developments - we need to change people's routines (both individuals and organisations) so they are less reliant on cars and simply preventing development on such grounds isn't the solution. I don't agree with your estimates about vehicular movements per day. I have a company car but I commute by train or work from home everyday and in a typical week my car moves on average 4 times a week, of which at most 2 movements are during the week (a Wednesday evening when I play football, and even then I often cycle instead of driving). My other half commutes by train every day and doesn't drive. However, I don't disagree that traffic congestion is an issue but preventing new development isn't the answer, there's a much bigger picture. For me personally, now I commute by train everyday what does concern me is the infrastructure capacity, just how long can trains get ?!. Dan, to clarify there is an emerging planning document specifically directed at the Golden Mile, which is the reason for the WC&GS press release. |
