UKIP haven't had a great deal of media coverage recently, and this was a pretty safe Labour seat, without any real chance of an upset, and with a reasonably centrist Labour candidate well-known locally.* Governing parties almost always shed votes at by-elections. Although Jeremy Corbean will no doubt be relieved the Labour vote held up, I don't think this is a significant indicator for what may happen later in this parliament.

* for the right reasons - i.e. not a Steve Curran or Ed Mayne type.
