"because they hadn't been worn often the adhesive had become brittle"

I have had similar problems with Clarks shoes, although the shoes were well over a year old. I pulled out what appeared to be a perfectly sound pair of shoes with leather uppers and rubber soles from my wardrobe, set off on a train journey, and by the time I had reached the other end I had socks poking out of the gap between the upper and the sole. In that the uppers are still in perfectly good condition it seemed a shame to throw them out, but apparently once that happens they are more-or-less beyond repair.
