I've worked on the foreshore near Hammersmith Bridge as a volunteer picking up waste at low tide.  Last time there was lots of medical waste, bandages, sanitary towels etc., not much plastic, not nearly as much wood as there was when I was a child.  My parents used to collect driftwood at Putney and use it as firewood before we had central heating.
