The Thames is nowhere near as filthy as it used to be.When I was a kid, the beaches were regularly covered with dead fish when the tide went out, and there was always huge amounts of driftwood.I also remember massive blocks of wax and polystyrene used to come downstream on ebb tides, so a firm upstream must have regularly used the Thames as a dump.If you fell in the river (as we used to as kids) you needed all types of injections to stop you contracting some horrible illnesses, and the river stank. Some hot summer days, the smell was revolting. The Thames might not be as clean as it should be, b u t it's much better than it was. |
