I'm going off half-cocked hear but.... whilst are cost of living is high, especially in London, our wages are high even compared to many wester european countries. Now, coming from the war-torn Eurasia and many parts of Africa, even on say £8/9 per hour, if one can save just £2.50 of that, then a 40 hour week will amount to £100 per week clear savings. In many of the places that these new settlers have come from, that kind of money will equate to a few months wages to an average worker/family in those places they have come from. Given how easy it is to attract money into the Uk from almost anyone for almost anything, then, again, i would conjecture that it's easy for people to get these monies back 'ome to people they know from where they came from in the 1st place. |
