Why do some people insist on being so aggressively unsympathetic? I'll assume a desire to prove they are more intelligent than others born out of the knowledge that they are not. The 'common sense' approach of not leaving the laptop in the car didn't serve me too well when mine was taken from me in a cafe a few years ago. I've always assumed if it has been shut down and is not visible from the outside of the car then it is reasonably safe and I've left it regularly in cars over the last few years without a problem. Although Julian's post was very helpful and informative I don't believe that having cables and sat nav paraphernalia would necessarily alert a thief to the presence of a device worth stealing. My car always has these items and I have never been broken into - walk along a line of parked cars and you'l see at least half with cables or sat nav docking points. My best guess would be that Jonathan's laptop was stolen because it was in sleep mode with bluetooth switched on. It is reasonable to assume that if you close the lid on your machine and it appears to be inactive it is not transmitting a blue tooth signal but clearly it would be. |
