The problem with Michael's point is that Facebook isn't claiming that they are not subject to tax because they hold data and process information offshore. If it were possible for them to do that then every online business in the UK including this site would put their information on servers in a low tax environment and avoid corporation tax. What Facebook does is structure their business so that more expense and less income is booked through their UK incorporation creating an operating loss. In your example the tax treatment of the road haulier and the marine insurer would be the same as their competitors but this is not the case for Facebook or other companies mentioned previously such as Boots and Starbucks. They are not breaking any laws but the Government does need to do something before we end up with a High Street and a media which is totally dominated by large companies who pay no corporation tax. |
