" In case you haven’t heard, the government have introduced a new law that requires all large retailers to charge at least 5p for plastic carrier bags. Let us explain in a little more detail… Will Ocado be charging for bags? Yes, from the 5th October we will charge 5p for each bag used to pack your shopping. The legislation applies to all single-use plastic carrier bags, which includes the ones we must use to make sure your groceries arrive undamaged and in tip-top condition. The additional charge will appear on your receipt. Why is there a charge? It’s all part of a government initiative to reduce litter and take care of our environment, something we’ve always been committed to. Over the years we have collected and recycled tens of millions of used bags and turned them into new ones, in an effort to reduce the number of plastic bags in circulation. What will Ocado be doing with the money? All the money we collect from bag charging will go to good causes here in the UK, including our new Bag Recycle Bonus. What is the Bag Recycle Bonus? We’re improving our current recycling scheme to encourage everyone to recycle their used bags once they have finished with them. So, from the 28th September, we will give you 5p for every used bag you give us to recycle. And that’s not just our carrier bags, we will happily give you 5p for carrier bags from other supermarkets too." |
