The two issues of medical use and recreational use of cannabis seems to have been conflated in this thread. To be clear there is no reason why a cannabis based product cannot go through the same drug approval processes that any other drug would have to and Savitex has now gained approval. There is no good reason why other cannabis products should be exempted from having to meet the same standards that other new drugs have to. The fact remains at the moment that the scientific evidence for the medical benefits remains patchy and there are other cheaper, better, safer pain reducing drugs currently on the market. Of course a lot of people claim that smoking cannabis offers them a great deal of relief from chronic illness and it undoubtedly can aid relaxation and reduce pain but the claims that it does so more effectively than other meds that might be prescribed should be viewed in the same light as homeopathy - just because lots of people say it works doesn't mean it actually does. My father during a long and painful illness got much relief from cigarettes even though they were compounding his symptoms. For recreational use there is powerful and growing evidence that cannabis use causes psychosis particularly amongst the young. Anybody with teenage children will probably be aware of tragedies that have occurred to their contemporaries. A noticeable proportion of the current generation of teens having their lives permanently blighted by cannabis is not really a price worth paying for some extra tax revenue. |
