Agreed, Andy. It is the height of absurdity to ban what is actually just a weed, albeit one that has been used for millennia for its medicinal and recreational benefits. I would also like to question the logic that says because there may be health risks attached to the consumption of cannabis it should therefore be illegal. There are far more serious health risks with all manner of activities that we are currently free to pursue. Why pick on weed? But if there are dangers with cannabis (and I think this has been overstated) then the last thing you want is to leave production and distribution of cannabis and other drugs in the hands of criminal gangs. But it is said that we need to protect children and young people. Quite right, but we are not protecting them at the moment - we are threatening them with a criminal record and this makes it a lot less likely that they will seek help if they are having problems with their cannabis consumption. Loads of countries and American states are now liberalising their cannabis laws and, surprise surprise, all hell is not breaking out. This is the civilised and sane way forward and lets hope that this momentum continues here in the UK. |
