On returning from Kenya, following news of her father's death, HM Queen Elizabeth II was driven from Heathrow to Clarence House via Chiswick High Road. There was no M4 but the Great West Road was well established. The royal couple arrived at the mini Chiswick Roundabout where the queues of trolleybuses and cars were on hold. Aged 13, I was standing amongst the crowds lining the High Road outside the 'old' Gunnersbury Station. It was a memorable time ...with the Coronation the following in June 1953. We seemed to have a deep respect in those days. Carry on celebrating! |
