Dan, I think it's a combination of two factors; firstly, and I think in most instances, principally it's photogenic, mammals are simply cuter than fish. As an interesting aside you ought to see noted naturalist Chris Packham on the subject of Pandas. Essentially he's very annoyed that an "evolutionary dead end" his words, sucks up a disproportionate amount of funding that could be better spent elsewhere simply because the animal looks sweet. Anyway, I digress, the angling thing, I completely agree, and was in fact making this point on another thread a couple of weeks ago. I don't see any fundamental difference between chasing a fox to exhaustion, shooting an animal so you can gurn for a photo next to its carcass, or jamming a sharp piece of metal through a fishes mouth, yanking it around on a line until it's exhausted, then thumping it over the head with a priest or cutting its throat. My feeling is that it's a class thing; far easier to hate a bunch of "toffs" in pursuit of a fluffy fox, or some idiot who's prepared to blow more money that most people earn in a year indulging his ego trophy hunting, than it is to turn your wrath on what could well be your next-door-neighbour off to bump off a few slimy yucky looking fish. |
