On its landing approach, a plane's engines are on the aeronautical equivalent of tickover, so aren't producing much noise. Most of the noise we hear is caused by the 'dirty' shape of the plane with flaps extended and landing gear deployed. That's what a second officer with Qatar told me. Difficult to see how landing noise sources could be much reduced. |
