Last time I looked at the methodology for determining the Public Safety Zones around airports, I think the crash data suggested that for modern first-world jets the crash rate was around 1 in 14 million flights and they were mostly associated with taking off or landing. At around half a million flights a year one might think it should be around one incident every 30 years for Heathrow. I guess the idea of limiting development in the Public Safety Zone is to avoid the crashes affecting densely populated areas. |
