Pardon my ignorance, but isn't this 'row' much ado about nothing? Tony Hall hasn't condoned the activities or atrocities of ISIS, he's simply refused to use an informal pejorative term to refer to them. The BBC is not alone, virtually every serious media organization does the same.

This reminds of when Fox News decided to start referring to suicide bombers in Israel as 'homicide bombers'. Superficial labeling that adds no analytical insight to what is actually being reported.

And why David Cameron sees it fit to criticise John Humphrys for employing the term 'Islamic State' while he himself routinely refers to it as 'IS', 'ISIS' or 'ISIL' is beyond me.
