My pets have had far more out of the insurance companies than I have paid in and I would not be without insurance now.  The maximum I pay is £40.00 per month for one of my ten year old cats, when it gets to over £60.00 I will probably just cover him for accidents only, which is much cheaper. and will just pay for any other treatment he needs myself. But when they are younger, and arguably when they are older too, it is definitely worth getting them insured.  When I got a rescue kitten who managed to get through a tiny gap in an upstairs open sash window and fell andbroke her leg and was then discovered to have other health problems before I had had a chance to insure her it cost me nearly £4,000.   That was a big and expensive lesson.  And if you don't insure them early enough, before they have health problems, it may not be worth it later as you will be paying the same price to the insurers while they exclude everything your animal has had wrong with it before you took out the insurance.   I have found an insurance company that will cover pre-existing conditions after two years of no treatment for that condition, so I am giving them a try with one of mine who was insured with a company that wanted to charge quite high premiums for a young cat (admittedly she has an ongoing condition, that may again require medical intervention in the future,  but even so I didn't see any point paying that when I could get lower premiums with another company).
