There sems to be no stopping the upward spiral of vets fees.As most pets are now insured, vets seem to be taking maximum advantage of the fact.A friend has a 6 month old puppy that developed a sore mouth. He took it to the vet who said the dog would need x-rays of the jaw to assist in the diagnosis. To enable the x-rays to be taken, the dog would have to be sedated so he wouldn't move while the x-ray was taken. So they went ahead.Dog sedated, x-ray taken, dog diagnosed with ulcers. Now I would have thought ulcers would be visible, and an x-ray should not have been necessary. The dog was given antibiotics to clear the ulcers and is now recovering. The fees for this treatment came to £740.The sedation alone was £300.How on earth can charges like this be justified ? My friend hadn't got round to insuring the dog, so that was a heavy bill to be presented with.Insurance companies are increasing their charges to cover their losses, but if these people don't see sense, nobody will be able to afford to insure their animals and the vets and insurance companies will all lose out.I pay £68 a month to insure my dog.Because he is over 8 years old, I have to pay the first £50 of any claim, and the insurance will only pick up 70% of the total bill.Something will have to give soon. |
