| 'What in your opinion is "the political damage that approval will do to the Council"?' Obviously zero in Chiswick where they have no expectation of winning any local wards. This development, despite being technically in W4 will have a much bigger impact on Brentford. The building will be separated from this area by the Chiswick Roundabout and despite its massive height may not actually be visible from that many homes in the area. Brentford on the other hand has more residential units in proximity to the scheme and it is likely to be their infrastructure that will come under the greatest pressure. There is already likely to be profound demographic change in the area and I make it that just shy of two thousand new homes will be built in the Brentford area alone by the time of the next election. For an MP with a majority of under 500 it becomes important not to alienate the existing residents. 'But what exactly is linkage back from the developers to the Council and any desire that Members and Officers might have to limit political damage?' I'm working on the assumption that this is a developer friendly Council. As has already been alluded to, the fact that Galliard were prepared to abandon a major project on the site which already had planning permission, suggests they have a great deal of confidence that they will get approval for the new scheme. The original plans indicated that this building would be 42 storeys high. Even if this ultimately doesn't prove to be the case it is likely to be substantially higher than the 20 storey maximum of the highest buildings currently in the vicinity. This will represent a profound change to the local area as it will probably be the first of several towers of this scale. Hence I believe a lot of money will be spent trying to persuade us that it is a good idea. Would love to hear your views on the matter which are likely to be better informed than mine. |
