I too read that in 'Private Eye' and against all the predictions of gloom and doom it worked in Nottingham and good for Philip Hammond as Transport Secretary at the time for refusing to annul the charge. Especially when other Tories including the P.M. were running around like headless chickens singing annulments. I thought Mr Hammond having to explain to his colleagues that "localism resulted in councils doing things which are not always in accordance with our own preferences and priorities" was a hoot. I shouldn't bother with Hounslow though apart from anything else all they seem interested in is snatching open spaces and parks from local people. |
