I read an item yesterday about the imposition of a Workplace Parking Levy in Nottingham. Despite strong initial objections this is now widely perceived to have been a successful measure. Any business providing 10 or more free parking spaces for employees is subject to a charge of £375 per space. There are exemptions for smaller businesses. This seems to be a good way of targetting larger companies with environmentally friendly working practices. Generally parking spaces are allocated as a perk to senior employees who consider themselves too grand to use public transport. Given the size of the car park at the Civic Centre, it may be that Hounslow Council is the largest provider of employee parking in the borough but the net cost to them will be zero. The measure would just result in an internal transfer of funds between departments. The Council may not like the idea because it would bring them into conflict with the larger businesses they are trying to schmooze to attract in to all the office space they see being built along the A4. However it would have the double benefit of discourage people from driving into the borough for work and reducing pressure on the parking revenue account so the Council don't have to squeeze local people hard to make up any shortages. I was thinking of writing to the Council to suggest they look at it but would be interested to hear the opinions of others first. |
