| As the leader of 1.2 Catholics the Pope can make a big difference by linking climate change and inequality. It is the poor who bear the brunt of global warming. In São Paulo which is traditionally an area where water is plentiful, there is now drought. The wealthy are able to buy themselves out with signs on their houses saying that they are not dependant on the water company. In the poorest areas residents have been without water for 13 days and bottled water is more expensive than petrol. But the Pope is up against business interest too with a Peruvian archbishop saying "it will have many critics, because they want to continue setting rules of the game in which money takes first place." Sounds familiar! Oil companies, Heathrow etc. We've been making and keeping Green Days green for years starting with zero waste and supporting the poor and needy, Traidcraft and sponsored by Eco-age, Green Tomato cars etc. this year all stalls were selling eco friendly products and all packaging is re-used or recycled. At the church as much as possible is recycled every day. We can all make a difference whatever our faith or creed. Oxfam, Greenpeace and FOE have been working tirelessly at it for over 40 years so it's good to have the Popes backing! |
