| I've been visiting Greece, and specifically Crete, a couple of times a year for many years. I have to say that the people I know and the people I've met there have always seemed to me to be extremely hard-working and very hospitable. I think that, as in many other places (eg the UK), the ordinary. hardworking people have been let down and betrayed by their politicians and their bankers, and now they are having to pay the price. As happened in Ireland, they were deluged with subsidies and handouts when they first joined the Eurozone, and now find themselves with an economic situation which is unsustainable. They should never have been allowed to join in the first place, but the vainglory of the Northern European nations, such as Germany, knew no bounds - they were out to create a mighty economic empire, and they weren't going to let little matters like economic viability stand in their way. Does anyone imagine the ordinary 'Greek in the odos' had any say in this, or understood its implications? The Greeks have been sold out, and their best option now is probably Grexit. |
