I liked your summary, David.

It seems to me that the huge problem of teaching this sort of topic is that we keep trying to position the activities of, e.g., 1215 as if they were happening today.

As David points out, the historical context was wildly different, and only the Barons stood to gain from John's concessions, certainly not the man on the Wessex carthorse.

That said, as a close friend who is a History teacher firmly believes, History needs to be brought alive to children.  If you can't tell a good story about King Richard, King John and the rest of the cast, than perhaps you shouldn't be teaching at all.
