The truth.  It was nothing to do with civil rights. That's a myth that has grown up in the past 300 years.  It was all to do with the barons' rights.  John was a weak but avaricious king, deeply unpopular, who believed that he was above the laws of the land.  The barons bitterly resented his attempts to grab more and more money from them, and by his abuse of their privileges.  They marched on London to overthrow him.  John was forced to give in, and signed a document that gave the barons the right to oversee the king, and keep him in order.  It also (towards the end) gave certain rights and promises to the Church and to freemen..i.e. not serfs and unfree men.
As soon as the barons' backs were turned, John got the Pope to annul this "shameful"  document.
