Hounslow Adult Education are planning to close all Monday Evening classes at Chiswick School from next academic year. This very unpopular decision includes Pottery, that has always been oversubscribed and has no alternative site! Adult learners are up in arms, as they have progressed in their skills and knowledge of materials and techniques, and the courses have been a rewarding outlet for their creativity over the years.
It is also an untimely decision just when pottery is becoming ever more popular and is the subject of a series of six programmes by the BBC this coming September. The remit of Adult Education should not just to educate for jobs but also to provide an opportunity for adults to learn new skills, to be inspired, to meet with like-minded people, and explore their creativity.
