If I were him I would bide my time a bit.

Assuming he has not withdrawn for more sinister reasons (skellies in the cupboard rattling their bones) he is only 36 and can allow a few other leaders to try and fail (Kinnocklike) before taking the lead in a more promising era (Blairlike).
