When I first left School I tried having a proper job for a couple of years and worked for Local Government. During the three years I was there we had a local and a general election so I put my name down to be one of the people who sat in the Polling Stations ticking off names and giving out voting papers. We were paid double time and there were four shifts to choose from, morning, afternoon, evening, and the count. I used to do all four 'cos it was a lot of money (back then) and I quite liked chatting to the policeman who used sit with us. Anyway ... having voted just now I was amazed to see EXACTLY the same proceedures being used as we used 35 years ago! By that I mean pens, lists of addresses, and no computers anywhere! Of course there WERE no computers back then but why in this day and age when everyone has a computer at home are they still drawing lines with rulers and ticking boxes with biros? And yes, we did used to correlate the ballot paper with the address, something I remember thinking was odd even at the time. |
