Having acted as both a presiding officer and a poll clerk some time ago (late 90's), I admit I don't have a clue what happened to all the stuff (other than the ballot box) after everything was brought back to the count. Training was basically a short Q&A session. What I don't recall was any link between the ballot paper given to a voter and their identity. Yes I'd ask for someone's polling card or their name and address, and cross them off against the register, but I don't recall anyone then recording anywhere which specific ballot paper was given to that individual. So all that was known inside the polling station was whether someone had turned up to vote or not. But I haven't personally seen a ballot paper since then and haven't voted since 1997, so I may well be out of touch. |
