I have complained to the Electoral Commission in past elections on this point. They always write back saying "Well, yes technically you are correct in that we do keep a record of every voter's name and address against their ballot slip, but please be assured that we never actually do anything with this information. We do not structure it into any comprehensive reports, for example". I simply don't believe it. If they don't use it then why design the system to carefully collect it, voter by voter, vote by vote? Why would you do that? Imagine I was the Chief Constable for some area in the UK with a high prevalence of far right / nationalist voters. The sort of people who might, for example, be inclined to attend an English Defence League or other far right rally. And maybe cause some problems as a result. Wouldn't it be handy to have a list of every person (with their address) who voted for the NF or the EDL in that area? I just don't buy this explanation that they do collect all this data, but then they just throw it in the bin after the election and nobody ever looks at it. It doesn't make any sense. They should not be recording our names and addresses against our ballot slips. They just shouldn't be doing it. |
