I always thought that the xylitol that is in sugar-free gum mainly came from grape extract and that was the source of the toxicity.

Grapes can seriously affect a dog's kidneys if ingested. The chances of some being discarded in a public park after a sunny bank holiday weekend are quite high. Unfortunately some dogs can get a taste for them.
