As probably mentioned in previous posts about xylitol - that is made from birch tree extract.  The packet I have seen states that it is "FOR FOOD USE ONLY"  and underneath "Not suitable for pets".  A bit of an understatement it would seem.

You certainly wouldn't realise from the packaging that it could be so deadly to pets.
